Community Of Care Practice: Food Forest Design FULL Day

    What This Is
This is a day to gather. To slow down.To listen. To remember how to be in relationship—with land, with each other, and with whatcomes after us.
Canopies of Care is a growing network across NovaScotia and the Maritimes, supporting the spread of perennial food systems in shared spaces: schools, daycares, community land, public spaces, and private land that wants to be shared.
This work is guided by three core threads: Earth Care · People Care · Future Care
Food forests/ Edible Forest Gardens/Perennial food systems are one way we can practice this.

This day is not about controlling land or maximizing output. It is about learning how to observe, respond, and design with living systems.

Humans are part of that system and Not separate from it.

    Event Description

This full-day Community of Practice is an invitation to gather, learn, and design together.

Rooted in the Canopies of Care initiative, this experience brings together nonprofits, schools, businesses, land stewards, and community groups who are interested in creating perennial food systems in the spaces they care for.

Using food forestry and permaculture as guiding frameworks, we will explore how to design edible landscapes that are not only productive—but relational, accessible, and responsive to place.

This is not a lecture-based workshop. It is a shared, participatory learning space.

    We will move between:

    land-based observation

    • practical design teaching
    • group reflection and discussion
    • collaborative exercises
    • Participants will leave with:

a grounded understanding of food forest systems in Nova Scotia

    • practical tools to begin or refine a design
    • insight into community-based and shared land models and how to activate
    • connection to a broader network of practitioners

    • Schools, daycares, and educators
